As a Morning News Intern starting from January of 2020 and later being promoted to Directing in 2021, in news production in Chicago, IL, typically I have performed a variety of tasks and gained valuable hands-on experience in the news industry. The specific responsibilities of a morning news intern can vary depending on the news organization, but here are some common tasks they might be expected to perform: Research and Writing: During my time as a Morning News Intern, I had the opportunity to dive into the world of news production. Researching current events and summarizing news articles helped me stay updated and provided essential background information for our news stories. I even got to assist with writing and editing scripts for our talented anchors and reporters.
Production Support: I was often responsible for ensuring our technical equipment was in top-notch condition. Setting up and maintaining equipment, operating teleprompters, and conducting routine equipment checks were part of my daily routine.
News Gathering: It was thrilling to accompany our reporters and photographers on assignments. I helped gather information, conducted interviews, and even assisted in capturing B-roll footage. This firsthand experience in the field was invaluable.
Archival and Research Tasks: Organizing and maintaining our news archives was another crucial aspect of my role. This involved managing video footage, photos, and news stories, ensuring our historical records were easily accessible.
Administrative Tasks: I handled various administrative duties, from answering phones to managing schedules and coordinating meetings and interviews. This provided me with a holistic understanding of the newsroom's operations.
Social Media and Online Content: I was also responsible for managing our news organization's online presence. This included posting news updates on social media, writing web articles, and occasionally creating multimedia content, all of which played a significant role in engaging our audience.
Production Assistance: One of the most exciting aspects of my internship was being part of live broadcasts. I worked on the studio floor, helping with cues, timing, and ensuring the smooth execution of our live shows.
